Life Support Training

Operation Smile is committed to offering Education and Training programs that provide life-saving skills to medical professionals. The aim of these capacity building interventions is to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge, which are critical in delivering more comprehensive and effective care to patients. In partnership with the American Heart Association (AHA), Operation Smile offers life support programs. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Operation Smile Mission in Kenya has provided free BLS training to over 600 medical providers and the more advanced PALS/ACLS courses to nearly 60 providers in over five locations throughout the country.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider Course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. The course is intended for certified or noncertified, licensed or non licensed healthcare professionals.

Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Healthcare Provider Course is designed to aid the paediatric health care provider in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently and effectively manage critically ill or injured infants and children, resulting in improved patient outcomes.

Helping Babies Breathe (HBB)

In addition Operation Smile has recently started offering Helping Babies Breath (HBB), which is an evidence-based educational program teaching the simple steps that effectively resuscitate the majority of infants not breathing at birth. HBB Targets health care providers in resource limited settings to carry out neonatal resuscitation. This program is instrumental in helping meet Millennium Development Goal 4 targets for reduction of child mortality by addressing one of the most important causes of neonatal death. In fact, out of 7.7 million deaths of children under 5 annually, 3.1m are neonatal and 98% of these are in low and middle income countries. Operation Smile has so far implemented the program in Namibia and Morocco.

HBB utilizes a train-the-trainer model in which potential facilitators are selected, trained to deliver a standardized educational program, and then assume responsibility for training facilitators and health care professionals within their medical facility or community. The program trains master trainers, facilitators, and learners and uses one simulator for each pair of trainees so that each participant takes turns being the learner (performing resuscitation actions/assessments of the baby) and teacher (providing responses with the simulator and verbal feedback on technique).
