Pre-register for Screening
If you are affected by a cleft lip and/or cleft palate and want to pre-register to be screened in one of our next missions please fill the following form. Your data will be collected by OSMIK Mission Coordinator who will get back to you as soon as possible.
All contact information and descriptions are asked to be recorded so that we have the ability to better assess and communicate with you. It is important to note that Operation Smile has established a long term presence in Kenya and so any patients not able to receive surgery on a mission will be considered a priority, if the patients meet the health criteria, for the following medical mission. Surgical candidates, who are screened but unable to receive surgery for this mission, will be given priority cards for the next mission.
The patients are selected by our medical volunteer team leaders. The selection process is done on a priority system as designated below:
- Priority 1: Cleft lip (unrepaired, any age)
- Priority 2: Cleft palate (unrepaired, 6 years of age and under)
- Priority 3: Cleft palate (unrepaired, over 6 years)
- Priority 4: Lip or palate revision (any age)
- Priority 5: Other
In addition, there is a list of safety criteria that the patients must meet. This process is to ensure that safety of the patients during surgery is our top priority. In brief, the selection process takes into account the patients current health status, age, weight and hemoglobin in order to determine if they are fit for surgery. Due to these factors, no patients are to be guaranteed surgery during the field patient identification and awareness campaigns.
